Dentist with a Heart, part 3

Well, we all fear the Dentist.
I guess I always did. Thankfully thru the NH Dentist with a Heart Program I managed to have 6 teeth fixed!, and one extracted : (.... Three visits, all in all, I would say was a success story. I met some great dentists in New Hampshire, and one not so great. I would have to say going to the dentist has changed in the past 10 years. (Since my last terrible experience) and the pain is nowhere near what it used to be like. When I had to go see a dentist, I would have a thousand reasons not to go "That day". It was the pain. Although this time  I did not get to have nitrous oxide, or sleep dentistry, the pain was not that bad.
I personally think the Dentist with a Heart program is a great way for dentist's to get new patients and old patients to come in and see what modern dentistry is all about. When a person is introduced to that "correct" dentist, the one who treats them really well, they will in return get a new patient, and more importantly positive word-of-mouth advertising. I know exactly where I will go back to, and where I will not go back to. It is just unfortunate that as in many things we have to learn through our mistakes. One bad dentists experience should not keep you from going back. They are not all the same. and if I were a Dentist, and I KNEW I was good...I would definitely volunteer one day out of the year to treat those who have limited funds, or at least like many, can find a lot better ways to spend their money. If a person feels as if they got treated well and relieved a decent service, the price can be acceptable. For me it was a lot of money for PAIN. And now that I am disabled and can't afford a dentist, it was a generous, appreciated gift.
I couldn't say, "Thank you" enough.
Remember, "Be true to your teeth, or they'll be FALSE to you".

Dentist with a Heart, part 2 the happy ending.

Well, Guess What?

I received a call from that dentist office that I went to, and got shoved to the back,
By not the office, but by the inconsiderate folks that were there waiting to be seen.

It was a good call, they were very understanding and apologetic, and couldn't believe that happened.
They couldn't believe everyone didn't think to ask if I got on the "To be seen next" list.

Bottom line, they offered me a one-time courtesy to be seen there for the cavity that the filling fell out of.
I couldn't believe it, but I am so grateful.
It goes to show as I have said before , "People are not mind readers" you really need to communicate in a
polite way, and don't be afraid to ask for what you need."
They honestly don't know what you want,
and I find sometimes, what you are hoping for is far less than they are willing to give.

EX: I was stuck in my van, the lift would not deploy on the snow, making getting out of the van impossible.
An old man came over, and helped me. He worked very hard pushing on the lift and wheelchair, till I was safe inside!
I didn't have the heart to tell him, "I was trying to get out".
Once,
I was at a dept store, checking out at the register, I seen a well dressed man looking at me! guarding the door. I thought, "Gee's this guy must be thinking I am a shop lifter". It wasn't till I approached the door that I realized he was standing there waiting, just to assist me by holding the door when I left.
See, there are some decent people out there, and this Dentist office, once they learned the facts, turned out to be pretty understanding, and all I was hoping for was an apology!

That doesn't mean every person in wheelchair needs or even wants help. I didn't at first, and I wanted to be independent. But I learned by not allowing someone to assist me is also hurting by robbing them of wanting to be a helpful and decent person. So even if I am all set, I will gladly accept any help offered.

Communication is............, AAAh, Uh, Um, ahh, kinda, sort-a, umm.
I think you know what I'm saying.

 Good talking with you all
I just thought you would like to know,

Dentist With A Heart Program NH Feb 2012

Hello,
here's what I did today!

February 2012,
the state of New Hampshire kicks off  dentists with a heart program here
in NH.
I called towards the end of January to see if I could make an appointment.
The pleasant voice on the phone told me to callback the the beginning of February.
the list was not made yet.
I called February 1st and was told the list was full now. but there were some walk-in clinics.
two, to be precise. none in my local area.
I called the various dentist's office's to see what time the clinics would be open.
I was told February 4th from 8-4. I then asked what time does the crowd show up?
the pleasant voice on the other end of the line told me people got there as early as 5:30 AM!

5:30 AM! hey I am disabled, and I can't get out out of bed that early. I then began to explain
to the receptionist Sue, that I was in a wheelchair and been to situations like this.
I explained people were mean and rude, they will cut you off and jump line, like old women at a bargain table
at Filene's! Just to get "Theirs" regardless of who they were hurting
I told her the wheelchair is usually the last person they bring in the building.
that said
I never get to take advantage of anyone's generosity. Sue, then told me SHE should be there eight a.m.
and would see that would not happen.
the day of that this with a heart program, I awoke at 4 AM. it took me till 5:30 to get out of the house.
I then drove over an hour to North Hampton. I arrived at the dentist's office at 6:35am and to my surprise
there were five people already there. I called over to one person and asked if he could help me with my wheelchair.
he told me it's too cold stay in the car. 20 minutes past and more people came, I called over to another person.
I asked, "could you help me with my wheelchair". that person also said it was too cold, and to stay in the car.
but, he said he would come get me as soon as the doors opened.
with*am rolled around, and just ask she said, SUE was there. I introduced myself and told her
I made it on time!
by that time there was over 20 people in line. just as SUE said, she opened the doors at 8 AM. the crowd piled in.
Finally, someone did come outside to assist me with the wheelchair. Remember I was there 5th because I woke at 4am and drove over an hour
to be sure I was seen.
the rear of the building is where the wheelchair ramp was located. Eventually it was opened and
the gentleman helped me from  up the ramp into the building. everyone had clipboards in the hands. the receptionist
asked if I needed a clipboard. she handed me a C/B with a form to fill out. shortly thereafter she came out with another clipboard
and handed it to a group of new arrivals approximately 8:30 AM.  When she turned around she took my clipboard and passed me the other clipboard.  That clipboard was the sign-in sheet. (I got it at 830am)
I waited in the waiting room patiently, and hour rolled by, and after an hour and several paople in and out
the gentleman who was first in line asked,

"how come he had not been seen yet", HE was first? the receptionist explained, there were three dentists, and one
dental hygienist. (he still should have been first). 20 minutes later he was seen into the office. 10am
two hours have passed, and I wanted to see how my dog was in the car. I asked if somebody could help me out of the building.
a woman said she would help. As we worked our way thru the narrow hallways with the wheelchair, I asked where I was on the list.
I was told there were 8 more people before me on the list I was on.
everybody that was before me was seen and left! a half a dozen others that came after me, were seen and leaving!.
and she tells me I won't be seen till after 12. In fact, "Come back after lunch!"
I've been up since 4 AM and my pain medication was wearing off and I was told I would hafta wait another
two more hours before being seen?

Sue told me this would not happen, this woman's telling me there is nothing she can do about it.
I had no choice but to drive over an hour home for more medication. I laid down to rest my back for a few minutes,
and pasted out for 2 1/2 hours. I was exhausted!

what happened? did the receptionist walk into the room, and just hand the clipboard to whoever she felt like?
did she even think to ask, "OK, who was here first?" She should be fired, or at the very least reprimanded.
what about the guy that was they before me (at 6:30 AM?)  And what of all those people that showed up at 8:30 AM,
Who Where handed the clipboard as they walked in the door? while I'm still being pushed into the building?

needless to say, I am very hurt by this experience.
She at the very least should have apologized to me, and seen if I could had been seen sooner.
Not, "There's nothing I can do about it" BS
(A very few places actually see a wheelchair person before the crowd....not in the last four years though)
I have a filling that fell out, The pain is unbearable and I cannot afford to see a dentist.
I'd like to say I didn't expect this to happen. I called to be sure it wouldn't.
I was told "It wouldn't" but it did...again.
It's happened before, it will happen again.
dentists with a heart,? how about, receptionist with no brain.!
a few people were very hurt by by her actions today, but the sneaky ones were pleased.
do you think they didn't know they were jumping the line?
do you think for a moment they thought these people here before me?
sure they did,
the old man, the two elderly women, and the man in the wheelchair
were at the end of the list.
Thank you Doctors that volunteer your time.
Shame on you receptionist that could have done a better job
if you cared.

Now, who cares?
what can I do about this injustice that happens to so many every day?
a feeling of helplessness. soon to be replaced by a feeling of hopelessness
if history follows thru as it has with other disabled persons.
nobody starts out hopeless

(could be the abscess talking)
